SEAQUAL® YARN: A high-tech yarn made from marine waste

Mon, 06.10.2025, 08:00

Yesterday's hazardous marine waste transformed into today's high-quality roll-up banners, displays and much more. Made possible thanks to SEAQUAL® YARN, a material made from the waste plastic found in our waters.

Joint commitment to clean oceans
According to the WWF, around 19 million tonnes of plastic waste end up in our oceans, lakes, rivers and canals every year. These huge volumes of waste not only threaten marine animals and destroy natural habitats; 92% of the plastics that end up in seas and oceans fall under the category of macroplastics. Macroplastics are created when plastics break down into their components in an uncontrolled manner. The microplastics released during decomposition processes subsequently accumulate in the food chain – not only ending up in the organisms of marine animals, but also in our own bodies – with unforeseeable consequences. So what can be do? The challenge is to collect as much plastic as possible from seas, oceans, rivers and estuaries before it becomes microplastic. But avoiding plastic waste is just one side of the coin. The other is utilising the marine plastic that has been collected in a meaningful and sustainable way. This is precisely where the SEQUAL INITIATIVE comes in.

The SEAQUAL INITIATIVE is a collaborative community dedicated to transforming marine waste into sustainable textile solutions (yarns and fibres) known as THE OCEANIC LINE. The initiative is committed to collecting plastic waste directly from the oceans and rivers and using it to produce high-quality textile solutions. In this way, the community has a tangible impact on the health of the seas and oceans.

The shift in thinking commences: SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC
Profit can be generated from marine waste: SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC is made from plastic waste collected from the sea and coastal areas. After collection, the waste is sorted, shredded into fine flakes, heated to around 80 degrees and thoroughly cleaned. The result is fine particles that are now made from recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate). After the cleaning process, the clean flakes are sent to Spain, where the SEAQUAL team and licensed manufacturing companies take care of the vertical supply chain within Europe. From here, the high-performance material, which meets the industrial standards of various sectors (including textile, automotive and furniture manufacturing), can be further processed in a wide variety of ways. For example, to create a durable monofilament (a yarn consisting of only one thread), cushion fillings with elastic structural integrity, or foam. Companies that use this material actively promote marine conservation and at the same time benefit from a sustainable raw material offering consistently high reliability.

A second life for plastic: SEAQUAL® YARN
SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC can already be found in sports shoes and rucksacks, and now appears in classic advertising materials such as roll-up banners – in the form of SEAQUAL® YARN. The special polyester yarn consists of 100% recycled materials – 10% SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC on the one hand and 90% PET waste from land sources on the other. This combination ensures the highest yarn quality and durability. Or to put it another way: SEAQUAL® YARN is in no way inferior to conventional polyester. It has all the advantages of conventional polyesters and adds a few benefits on top:

  • 37 % less CO2 emissions compared to similar products
  • 34 % less water consumption compared to similar products
  • 40 % less power consumption compared to similar products
  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: guarantees that the yarn is free from harmful substances and safe for human consumption
  • Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certified: fulfils the strict requirements in terms of recycled content, environmental practices and social responsibility
